Early Treatment

Your family dentist is a good source to identify when it is time to be seen by an orthodontist. It can be beneficial to screen a child as early as age 7 for possible orthodontic treatment. With early screening, we can recognize potential problems before they become serious.

During your child’s initial visit, we will determine if there are any problems such as cross-bites, open-bites or severe crowding that need to be addressed. If treatment is indicated, we will create a personalized treatment plan for your child that will benefit his/her situation. Often, Dr. Wheeler determines that your child may benefit from treatment at a later date. If this is the case, he will see your child at 6 to 12-month intervals to monitor your child’s dental development. There is no additional charge for this service.

Early orthodontic treatment varies among patients, but may include removable or fixed appliances that can provide more room for crowded, erupting teeth or preserve space for un-erupted teeth and reduce the possibility of tooth extraction.

Adolescent Treatment

The ideal time for orthodontic treatment occurs when the primary teeth have been replaced with permanent teeth. The age for this varies from individual to individual, but generally occurs between the ages of 11 and 15. The majority of our patients begin treatment at about this age. Traditional braces are generally recommended for this group of patients because they are the most cost-effective and efficient treatment. Sleek brackets can minimize the appearance and colored ties allow the adolescent to have a little fun with their new look.

We know that adolescence is generally a very active time of life and we strive to run on time and offer appointments that minimize time away from school.

If your child has lost most of his/her primary teeth, please call us today at 419-473-1339 or email us to schedule a complimentary evaluation.

Adult Treatment

There is no age limit to when you can give yourself a beautiful, confident smile. One of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21. Many adults are benefitting from the recent advances and new technologies of orthodontic treatment. With today’s options, we can minimize the appearance of braces by using clear braces and aligners. These new techniques and materials have made achieving a beautiful smile more comfortable and less noticeable than ever.

Orthodontic treatment in adults can be for purely cosmetic reasons – to straighten crooked teeth or close unwanted spaces – and can improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Orthodontic treatment can also improve the overall health of your teeth and gums. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel, headaches, and pain in the jaw joint. Dr. Wheeler and his team will work together with your dentist to produce the best functional and aesthetic results.

If you have concerns about your teeth, you can have your questions answered at your complimentary consultation. Please contact us today by calling 419-473-1339 or emailing us to schedule a new patient appointment for yourself.
